Hi Johnathan. I really like the graphic look of it. I would like to see you push it further by making the mass of white really flat, even so it feels even more graphic. Might be worth a shot. Or if you keep this textured white mass, I like to see a little ledge, or a surface so it feels like its a triangle shaped window in a white wall. Hope that helps.
Hi Gavin, for your first full value drawing this is great. So many things working. The first thing I notice is the general slope of the face, esp. the chin to the forehead. It should roll backwards more. Which will strengthen the architecture and make the drawing read more like an upshot. Also added some dark accents to the near eye and ghosted out the far. Hope that helps.
Hi Carlise, beautiful work so far. There are many things working. The first thing I would work on this value composition. I would like to see more contrast, more unified darks and a brighter fabric so it separates from her skin and becomes its own value shape mass. As for the drawing, I made some subtle adjustments to the eyebrows to unify them, the lips to align them and overall plane definition and also more contrast. Hope that helps.
I like the use of mixed media. Very bold. I would like to see you try same technique but with a dark background so the face image has a chiaroscuro feel.
Hi Marco. Great to see you doing line exercises. I still do this exercise too! It’s very helpful. I like your straight line exercise. It may seem boring but it will help you improve quickly.
Hi Francisco. Did you paint this from live model? If it’s your first, really nice job. The main thing I noticed is the drawing can be improved in certain areas to give more structure and naturalistic look. Specifically in the shape of the jaw, the nostril, neck and even the highlight on the hair can suggest the curve or volume of the skull. Color wise, I would more cools or blue to the face, feels too pink and monochrome overall. Also add some warms to the field of blue in the bg and simplify some of the shapes and contrast. Hope that helps. Look forward to more of your work.
Hi Myriam, I really enjoy the effort in your work and the variety of approaches and mediums. #12 is my favorite so far. I think you’re strength is capturing emotion especially in the eyes. I would like to see how you would approach a series of heads with an emphasis on planes and plane definitions. It would help make your heads feel more 3d and stronger.
Hi Chi, I really enjoy your drawings so far. Look forward to more. You’re proportions are good and your gesture is good. I’m glad you did a master copy too. I would encourage more of that.
For these really short, 2min or less poses, try making one lone, simple curve as the primary gesture. It’s more of a thoughtful, design based way of drawing but it may be helpful to add to your practice. Keep up the good work.
May 26, 2020 at 9:10 am in reply to: How to Draw Costumed Figure Bill Perkins Exercises critique #552080Hi Jilian. At first glance the tonal composition looks good so far. It has a high key, low contrast feel. If that’s what you’re after then it is working.
As for progressing, I would take one area to a finish. It’s missing a focal point. It doesn’t have to be the face. It can be the hand or even the cup.
If you after naturalism/realism, then I would address the scale and shape of the shoulder girdle. It feels small relative to the head.
Thanks for posting. Look forward to more progress.
Hi Paula. Beautiful drawings. Your anatomy knowledge is impressive. Makes me want to do some anatomy studies. My favorite drawing so far is the blue wildebeest. I really enjoy the way your overlap forms, it reads really well.
Hi Paul, wonderful sketchbook pages so far. A sketchbook page is a life changing practice. Very inspiring what you are doing.
As for your work, your figures are very strong, especially your sense of gesture. For me, I really enjoy the graphic quality of your gouache paintings. The outer shape reads so well. Keep pushing that. Look forward to more of your work.
Hi Eric, here is a video critique of one of your paintings
Hi Josseline,

There’s nothing I love more than pages and pages of studies. Well done on the volume and number of drawings.
Your gesture drawings look really good. I can tell you understand of the concepts and principles. Even the proportion feels “right”. Your anatomy studies and Bridgeman copies are also good. I use to copy the drawings from his book back in the day 🙂
I would suggest that you challenge yourself now. That can be done in a number of ways…
1. Draw from life or live models
2. draw longer poses, 5, 10, 20 minute or more
3. Draw longer, more intensive anatomy studies starting with the full skeleton.
Just some ideas. But you’re clearly at a good stage and ready to keep progressing. Hope that helps.
