    Hi Joshua,

Really nice drawings. I like the way you add exaggerate and add caricature. For this head, the main thing I notice is the forms of the forehead are not reading. It should read first as a cylinder (left to right) and then secondary planes from the front to the top. In general the shadow side is too busy and has equal visual weight and importance to the light side. I would choose one side as dominant and make the other secondary. Hope that helps.

Hi Zhi, really. nice painting. The drawing and colors are working well. The main things I notice are:

    • plane definition is not clear, especially around the eyes/eye socket.
    • In general the shadow side feels too bright and too busy with too much bounce light and detail.
    • The edges on the mouth and lips are too sharp and should be softened especially in the shadow side.

I like the direction you are going. It makes me think of John Asaro or Zhaoming Wu. Asaro has an excellent painting lesson in this library if you haven’t seen it already. Hope that helps.

Hi Deborah, really nice drawings and studies so far. I love your recent DAy 49,50 drawings. The skull structure reads well. In the figure, the hip construction reads well. I would also study construction of the upper torso, especially the shoulders and upper back. Look forward to more drawings.

Hi Jean. Nice drawings so far. I love the way you clearly define the planes and the shadow. It gives your heads so much structure. Look forward to seeing your drawings after a 100 days

Hi Jessica. Really nice portrait. I like your color choice too. Burnt Sienna is one of my favorites and it adds warmth to the portrait. To me the gaze is really well done. Has a lot of depth. Look forward your next portrait

Hi Luis. Really nice drawing. The proportions and placement are working. I like the hatching as well. The way it follows the form gives the drawing more volume.

Hi Alessandra, really nice drawing. A head turned up (or down) is very difficult so you did really well. I agree with Tomas and Gavin’s comments about structure and the box model. The first thing that I notice are alignments and anatomy.

I would enlarge the size of the cranium and thicken the neck.  If you compress the height of the head, the proportions will generally read better. I would also make sure the brown line, eye line and fore head wrinkles all wrap around the cylinder of the head. Use the ear as a marker or guide. Hope that helps.

Hi Denie, really nice studies. For being a 1 minute exercise you did well. The gesture and fluid movement is working. The main thing I focus on is maintaining the structure and integrity of the figure’s forms underneath. For example the shoulders here start to lose forms. I will often edit out or design a fold if it does not reinforce the structure and form I want. For me that is priority #1. Hope that helps.

Hi Alon. Really nice paintings. I love the way you paint materials and the atmosphere of the tomato piece. For the pumpkins, the first thing I notice is the composition. I would arrange them to create more overlaps and force the sense of depth and atmosphere. Also I would add or exaggerate the saturation in some areas like the core shadow. I feel it needs a little saturation to make it pop off the canvas. Hope that helps.

Hi Christopher. It’s warm my heart to see artists do fundamental drawing exercises. I still do them myself and I always encourage art students to do these type of ‘dexerity’ exercises.

Your elipses look great but I love the pages of tones and freehand lines. It can get boring but it pays off in long run. Keep it up.

Hi Zhi, really nice sketches and studies. I enjoy your drawing skills and your use of color. It’s very bold and unique. #57 stands out for me. The composition almost makes me feel like an abstraction. Very eye catching.

Hi Diane. Wonderful portrait. I’m glad you kept going and painted a second. The second one is much higher quality in drawing, value and execution. Looking forward to your 3rd and 300th! 🙂
