Are these from imagination? Reference? Stylized after the reference? Chris Legaspi has a cool exercise where he just focuses on the big outer shape. Good exercise for observation/likeness. You can definitely explore the neck to shoulder connection. Huston mentions it in his timed-sessions. Check out his free Head drawing vid on NMA’s YT channel.

Love the blue. Is this inspired by Picasso’s ‘Blue Period’ paintings?

Only critiques I have are: Think of a cylinder/barrel form for the mouth. Lips are never just ‘straight/flat’ on the face.

And, for the cast shadow down the neck and collarbone, observe the form it’s hitting. There should be some definite rhythms following the shapes of the neck and whatever folds the clothing may have.

    Good job.

Hi Deborah. I was lurking here the past week. I looove your sensitive line-work for those hands. Also this whole thread reminds me to hit Perspective HAAARD! >_<

No problem man. Keep looking/studying/watching/reading your learning resources. Hang outside. Watch how people carry themselves. Then draw more and more.

Skull on the top-left turned out good.

Don’t beat yourself up too much on gesture. It’s difficult to get. Take a break if you need. Practice form/line making for the time being. Spend a day looking at Da Vinci/Raphael sketchbook drawings.

Hi Isabella. Nice exercises you got going throughout.

I like that skeletal draw-over. Pay close attention to the curvature of the spine. The cervical section (Jesus’ neck) is too straight. Same for both lumbars of each. The Cervical and Lumbar actually curve out the other direction.

Man, darkening those values always just makes it pop and brings it together.

Question, your light is coming from above-right, and the shadow is casting down to the left, but curious to know why is there a dark value coming off the right side?

    Awesome nonetheless. Keep it up!

Hi Mattias. I love how loose you are and how simply you describe form. These figures are quite animated and clear. How long are you spending on these?

Curious to see how you tackle a figure made of cylinders+boxes going forward. 😛 😉

Being already into Steve Huston’s Perspective chapter, I had already filled up a bunch of tracing pads based off his structure/gesture pages at some point of this sketchbook. Looking back at these pages, I can definitely feel his influence coming out. I had been under Glenn’s teaching years prior. It was nice going to a session and choosing a process from the toolbox.

@Alchemical Thanks for the kind words Sir.

As promised, here are a few long-ish poses. These range from 5, 10, to 20 minutes. All from life.

    Hi Ram,

What makes you say that these set of drawings are “pretty bad”? If the problem is about how the parts connect, then that may be an issue on ‘gesture’. Remember, gesture is how forms flow into each other and the relationship between them. Avoid drawing the contours and get a ‘feel’ for how those forms are moving overall through the figure. Like it is said, ‘get the total’.

    Hi Debra.

What is it about the limbs you don’t understand specifically? From this recent post of yours, the limbs (as form studies in this case) don’t necessarily need to be connected to the torso itself. I know Luca Cambiaso does it but Glenn has them float if need be. The light/shadow separation is always helpful in showing how a form is. Observe your reference again. Then go back to these drawings. Also, don’t time yourself. If you wanna take time on a small study, just go for it and absorb it slowly.

    All the best.

Hi Alex. Good study throughout your thread. Keep it up. Regarding drawing boxes, did you learn by drawing them by eye or did you jump right into theory?

Those vehicles are looking solid. I have Scott’s book. Great info!
