Thanks very much for your encouragement and kind words, Carlise. I’ve posted Day 20 but it hasn’t shown up yet – I imagine it’s in the works somewhere…
Great work Carlise. Those plates are a super source of inspiration. I know all about crappy phone photos under bad lighting!
Best wishes,
David.May 26, 2020 at 2:44 pm in reply to: David’s 100-Day Challenge – Draw something, draw anything #552507Sorry about the double post above. It was odd – I posted them, but they didn’t show up at the time (I didn’t get an error – just nothing happened immediately). Now two days later they’ve arrived!
Anyway, here is day 19’s piece. I’m just following Bill Perkin’s lecture – zero originality here! Will try the exercise tomorrow (3 distinct value ranges from a photo I’ve taken). I also need to sort out better indoor lighting. I’ve started a new job today so will generally not be sketching in the day I think (unless I can sneak in the odd quick sketch) so will be photographing my daily efforts in the evening. I’ll be looking for artists lights (or lights that can double up as studio lights for photography as I do a fair amount of that too).

I’ve noticed that the SW-NE ellipses are much easier to draw than the SE-NW ones (I’m right-handed) and furthermore the N-S ones are the hardest. After doing a few of the N-S ones, the SW-NE ones seem like a complete breeze. I’m quite happy with the egg/organic shapes – they are very pleasing to draw – I will do lots more of those :o) I should do the hard ellipses too. The circles are far from perfect but not totally shameful.

On the subject of pencils my current favourite are the Conté à Paris ones – there’s a nice set they do called “6 sketching pencils” – 5 brown shades and a black one. They are really thick, dreamy texture, easy-ish to rub out (not as easy as graphite, but easier than coloured pencils).
May 22, 2020 at 5:56 am in reply to: David’s 100-Day Challenge – Draw something, draw anything #542786Thanks very much, Nick. My advice is just to go for the challenge. Some days I only get 5 or 10 minutes to draw but that’s all it takes to do a few quick sketches. I think getting into the habit of daily practice is very important, which is why I’m keen on completing the challenge.
Thanks for the pencil advice. I’ve actually got a full set of Caran d’Ache Pablo pencils (I think they are a wax based), and I’ve also got a bunch of older cheaper coloured pencils too which might be oil-based, I don’t know. I read about Verithin – they seemed to have mixed reviews – some people say they break too easily and end up worthless as they are ‘broken all the way down’.
Beautiful figures Chi well done.
Great figures with lots of energy! Are these from imagination?
May 21, 2020 at 2:15 pm in reply to: David’s 100-Day Challenge – Draw something, draw anything #541917Some head studies based on Steve Huston’s book. Very tired here, poor results today but least I picked up the pencil! My iPhone camera recognised the top two as faces at least!! The top right one was supposed to be a robot but ended up with stupid hair :o)
I think tomorrow I’m going to do a bunch of loosing up exercises by drawing a ton of ellipses and circles. I think drawing nice symmetrical egg or ellipse shapes I find quite challenging.
I’m learning a lot by following your efforts, Jakob, well done! I watched Mr Rey’s video (thank you Mr Rey) and found that very interesting. I haven’t properly started with figure drawing – I’m still working my way through the beginner’s class. Best wishes, David.
Love that seated figure with crossed legs. Great pose and flowing lines.
