Keep it up, Jac!  Great work, I think the landscapes are getting more fluid, natural and colourful, lovely!

I like it when you say I really struggled with this, because that’s how I feel a lot when I draw too, but often the end result has a life of its own and the process is forgotten in time – I think it’s best to convey lightness and ease rather than struggle (subject depending obviously), but honestly I don’t see struggle in the work where you said you struggled, except perhaps with the head and torso study on 09/08/2022 but even then it looks pretty natural.  Also maybe you feel its a struggle because of Covid.  Do take care and rest up and don’t push yourself too hard – you don’t want long Covid!

    Best wishes,
    David.

For inspiration you could look at the work of Claude Lorrain or Caspar David Friedrich who perhaps both used a slightly exaggerated depth of field effect (like very pale distant mountains etc).  Just pop their names into your favourite search engine and look at images… I think you will see what I mean.  Your work reminds me of Constable actually and I was lucky to see a lot of his paintings up close at a recent exhibition in Ipswich.  I remembered wrongly that Constable had more depth of field to his landscapes, but I was wrong when I reviewed them again just now – trees and whatnot on the distant horizon are rendered with a clarity and presence which is absent from Lorrain’s work for example.  As I said it’s a style thing – on misty days one has this pale effect at a distance due to haze, but not all days are hazy.  I’m sure Lorrain and Friedrich were using this regularly to their own effects.

Great work, keep it up.  I did the 100 day challenge a while back and it took me 200+ days due to moving house and so on.  Well done on your dedication and skill here.  I like your sky studies very much and Day 2.  I think you could bring more depth into the landscapes – you’ve got it there, but it could be emphasised – obviously that’s a style/personal choice.

    Best wishes,

    David.

Hi Jair,  very nice work and good proportions.  I struggle with proportions so I will take note of your work!  Good luck with the challenge.

    Best wishes,

    David.

Inspirational, Paul!  Love the left hand studies too.  I think if I were to do such things they would be farrr worse so well done for doing that.   I like the blend you have of rough and precise  – it gives the sketches a dynamic sense.  For example the head in the lower left on day 42, or the torso on the upper right – there’s a lot of what looks like rough casual shading (although it too has a precision) mixed with really precise heavier values which emphasise the forms.  Nice style!

I remember you said you have a lot of sources, but I’d really like to know more about them.  Are they mainly books or cuttings or internet images?  Is it all photography or other sketches or a mix?  I wondered if the 2nd lady’s right leg in Day 36 looks a little too long – then thought that might be lens distortion (i.e. the whole figure is foreshortened) if taken from a photograph?

I think I’ve decided on my next 100 day challenge.  I’m going to start doing sketches of sports.  It’s a wide subject with a lot of available resources – everything from greek statues of discus throwers to photos in the sports pages of the newspaper.  I was inspired two things – wonderful image of a cattle herder jumping off a buffalo backwards into water (I’ll do a sketch of this and post the original) and a recent article by Waldemar Januszczak who was saying there wasn’t enough sport in art, which got me thinking. Now I just need to find the time…

    Best wishes,

    David.

    Dear Paul, Happy Christmas!

Honestly, if I had a tenth of your talent and looseness I would still count myself very lucky indeed.  Those figures are really beautiful and have a great deal of character and life to them.  I particularly like the figure lifting her right leg and balancing on her left.   Tremendous work!

There was a lady, Susan if I recall, who was doing the pen eye studies on here and gave up around day 30 without much explanation (I think she said life overtook her), and I asked her how she got such lovely flowing lines and her answer was simple – work larger.  I think she was drawing a single eye on a massive sheet of newsprint.  Maybe try that and see if it warms things up?!

    Best wishes and keep well,
    David.

p.s. No, I’ve still not started my second challenge or resumed my studies – will do soon!

Great studies, Paul! I particularly like the seated female figure in Day24. What are your references?

It’s Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count or I see there is a French translation if you prefer that! Dessiner le corps humain: Une leçon de maître.  Ok, it doesn’t actually have anatomy in the title and it’s not really an anatomical study book per se, but it does have a lot of anatomical ideas in it.

    Cheers,
    David.

    Hey Paul,

Well done for taking on that book!  I do like the look of it.  For my first anatomy book I chose our very own Steve Huston’s work which I can say is very nice indeed (of course!)

To answer your earlier question, I still haven’t resumed my art studies or commenced another 100-day challenge as the dust is still settling from my move – still many boxes around the place, to-do lists, tradespersons to call and so on.  The darker winter months should provide some quieter evenings though to get settled into a routine.

Keep up your good work – I will be following with great interest.

I like those symmetry torso studies – a great 3-d feel about them there.

    Best wishes,
    David.

    Hi Paul,

It’s all relative you know: specifically if I was posting these ’embarrassing’ efforts I would be mightily proud of my work.  We are all students, standing on the shoulders of giants etc. The gesture sketches have life and lovely flowing forms.  I think you are right about posting no matter what.  It shows the progression.    I’m really enjoying your efforts – keep going!

    As the French say: courage!

    Best wishes,
    David.

Hi Paul,  All is well.  I haven’t started another challenge yet – I’ve just moved house (again!), but this time it’s for good.  Just finding my feet here which is going to take some time (it’s a bit of a renovation project out in the boonies!)  I feel humbled to see your efforts and all the other wonderful artists.  I’m not sure what my next challenge will be – something simple like everyday objects.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,

    David.

    Hi Vaudehi,

These sketches are great – I particularly like the Day 40 one – good forms and tones, quite a striking pose.

You’ve got a good eye – keep going on the challenge!

    Cheers,
    David.
