Copy of a sketch in Steve Huston’s book. I find copying sketches much easier than sketching from a photo or life. Guess that improves with practice. Quite happy with the overall look of this one, although her left forearm might be slightly too long…

Steve’s lines are really exquisite – each line means something and contributes and flows. Mine is a base copy!!

Another quick sketch today.  Found that my ellipses are a lot more controlled when I draw a bounding box around them.

Thanks Joshua.  I only had a few minutes spare today so tried the 1 and 2-minute figure sketches – reallllly tough! Most of them came out like aliens apart from this one which is semi human :o)  Tomorrow I should have a bit more time.  I’m pressed for time as I’m preparing a new workshop and there is a lot to do on the ground.

Verrry sketchy today.  Just had time to make these 1 minute sketchs of a tiger balm jar.  Quite a tricky object to capture well – it has a hexagonal base and a round top.  Will have another crack at it with more time.  I think an axis will help alignment issues. 11 of 100

Lovely sketches.  What paper are you using?

Today’s effort.  A very quick sketch of exercise 1 in Steve Huston’s book which I got today. Yipee! Lovely book! Well done Steve :o)

The hair looks great, very carefree!  Nice poses and forms – looks natural and flowing.

Took this one with flash.  Hopefully a bit brighter. Again this is from the beginners lecture by Bill Perkins.  I’m finding figure drawing really tough. I think I’m getting all the legs a bit short in my sketches.  It might be something to do with my viewing angle.  Will experiment.

Thanks for the feedback Myriam.  I’ll try to up the light levels for the photos taken at night or leave to daylight.  With the daily challenge I’m often drawing just before I hit the sack!

    I’m not seeing an image?

Very nice :o) I like the smoothness of the brown pencil more than the ink work – I think it suits the human form better (to my eyes at least).  It adds a softness to the curves.  Lovely forms.  Perhaps one day I might be able to sketch like this!

Are these poses from images on NMA or elsewhere or from life?

    Best wishes,
    David.

Great! Lovely tones.  Really looking forward to seeing more of your work.  I have the same eraser as you! I’ve also got a small version of the same kind of thing (maybe by a different company).

9th day of drawing.  Another sketch copying Bill Perkins’ excellent lecture on gesture/forms.  Found this pose quite tricky.  This is the second attempt at it actually.  First was a bit laughable :o)

Here’s today’s effort.  Re-using my self portrait work of this morning, but it’s all part of my draw-something-each-day challenge! Pencil Portrait #2

This is worked up from a photo.  I’ve got a lot to learn about natural shading of the face – my eyes keep coming out too dark for example.  I guess this will come with practice.  Also I’m reaching for a 6B to start off with when I should probably work from an HB or 2B.  There is something of a likeness there but there’s still a long way to go before I get the feeling I’m looking at myself!  I might develop this one further, but actually I’ve lost quite a lot of weight since that photo was taken so will probably choose another.  With the head  turned slightly this makes angles and facial features a bit more tricky than if it were a head on shot.   The nose and the mouth are quite wrong looking and need to be fixed.  I’ve learnt that portraiture is HARD!

Thanks, Chi.  Yes, sorry, I can’t claim any originality marks here :o)
