    Hi Denise,

Gland you enjoy the tutorial! “Shape Design” is something I emphasized a lot in my work. It help with different levels on making your art work seens more gestured and dynamic. It’s a tricky one to do. You got to know what is the Over all gesture of the pose, the story and the essence of it….its a Happy shape or sad. Does it screaming at the viewer or gentle and clam,  is it support by something or not?does it evolve with tension?……

It will be hard to do if you are doing just section of it and not knowing what is the overall pose about. You made a wise choice to extend a min. After the pose was up. Keep in mind, you are not races against the time. The speed of your drawing will pick up once you get better. And to get better, like Chris suggest to you by understanding 3 dimensional volume, and having your 2 dimensional shapes to reinforce it.

The way to help doing that ,fist thing is to “Draw Though” see how Chris draw though the figure as egg and cylinder ,then you will be able to draw the out fit over them also using the folds to wraps around them.

Good luck, keep up the hard work!

    Hi Deborah,

Great Draftsmanship!  There can still use bit contrast in few of Deeper areas to give more depth as well as contrast.

I gave you few suggestions on grouping your background value. So it can work more cohesive with your skull.

    Hi,

Your drawing has good sense of fluidly .I can see you are searching for gesture and rhythm when you developed them which Are excellent. The downside of that are the drawing will Suffer on structure which Also means Perspective. The connections of body Which often be seeing as corner ,will easily misplaced.

My suggestion will be start off you day with short poses like what you are doing now, then Transition into more longer poses and focusing on structure and pay attention and how all parts fit together. Look for corners and using it As reference point to establish proportion.

Without understanding structures, 3 1/4 view most likely will be Suffer, especially the pelvis area.

    Good luck! (Thumbs up)

Very Nice painting! I like the transparency and the opacity in the painting. Good drawing as well.

In the “Paint over” I gave you few suggestion that give more depth to the painting. Alway pay attention to the gesture of the compositions , it help to design shapes and to intergrade them.

Use more different edges, the only soft edge you have was on top yoda’s head. Different edges can also benefit creating depth and focal point to the painting.

Hi Patricia, The pencil drawing of a figure is beautifully done. In the Draw over I point out few anatomical and proportion issues , I drew some Arrow to indicate where are the Gesture and Rhythm though the pose, always be aware where they are will allow you to make choices  on light and shadow shapes.

Hi Tanya, The painting is coming along great!

Often when we started painting and we got caught up with color, color mixing and techniques….keep in mind to still remind yourself the initial design (Composition, Gesture, Shapes, value) of the piece. I did a draw over, to show you what’s the possibility on pushing the gesture to your shapes to give more harmony to the over all composition. Also pay attention on silhouettes how it effect the negative and positive space. Keep up the good work!

    Painting feedbackBeautiful Painting!! Great atmosphere.

I wrote some feedback on the photo below .

One of the most toughest thing in both Drawing and Painting, is composition. is a visual communication and there are so many way to interpret it. Graphically or 3 dimensionally. Bill Perkin, One of the instructor here on NMA has a Great lesson on that topic, you can check it out.

Beautiful Painting! caught my eye. Here are some compositional feedback I drew. Besides simplify the folds on upper right, we can Aslo group few of them. There are bit too many light and shadow  “Breaks” in that area which makes them feel isolated. That same “Breaks “appear on new born”s right shoulder, make it fell detach. I really like the intensity and emotion you gave to the painting.

Hi here is a vid critique, you graphs good sense on Line of Action. Those Bridgeman copies are wonderful. Try to apply the construction idea to your figure studies.
