Thanks Josseline. I appreciate that and your critique. As I mentioned to Joshua, sometimes I pay too much attention to the reference. As to “usually taking my gouache to this kind of finish” I so seldom use gouache I don’t know how far I take them. That’s one reason I’m doing this challenge, to figure out how to use it and how far to render with it. I agree, I like the flat graphic shapes too. I’ve always enjoyed rendering things, but often take them too far. I’ve been trying to loosen up while recognizing that, after battling this tendency for years, I need to honor the fact that I do like to render things rather realistically. I’m trying to find a balance that I find enjoyable and rewarding.
I’m afraid I’m going to have to do two days work tomorrow. I woke up with a killer headache. Haven’t been able to shake it and I just can’t concentrate on my work. I’m bummed but will try to compensate later tonight and tomorrow.
You’re right Joshua. I was paying too much attention to the reference I was working from. I need to use the reference but not let it dictate what I do.

You’re really putting your time in. It’s going to pay off. It’ll be great seeing your growth in the weeks to come. Have you seen Steve Huston’s video on drawing the head? It’s awesome.
Hi Dane,
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve never used white ink in the manner you suggested. I might try that.
I do often use white charcoal on the ink drawings. I was thinking of doing that in the ones I do today. Maybe I’ll add some white gouache.
Hi Josseline,
Nothing wrong with buying an inexpensive pen. Last December, while visiting friends in LA, I went to one of my favorite stores in Little Tokyo and bought a very inexpensive and compact fountain pen with replaceable ink cartridges. While not as nice as the one I sent the picture of, it’s fine, very small and easy to replace the ink on the road with the ink tubes.
I’ve also been thinking of experimenting and buying several different inexpensive pens on Amazon. There’s an amazing variety.
In large part because of some of the other challenges I’ve been looking at, like Eden and Zach, I thought working in 3 values initially may help with my gouache efforts. As usual, when trying something new, it goes slower at first. So I didn’t finish this today, but will finish it tomorrow along with a page of drawings. I appreciate seeing other artists approaches. It helps me think outside of my comfort zone.
Nice. I like your graphic shapes and simplification of details.
That’s a really awesome page you posted on 4/10! You found so many different compositions in one scene!
You asked about suggestions to avoid back pain. I’ve struggled with that for years. How are you drawing now? Is your paper at an angle, possibly affixed to a drawing board?
