Yeah, it’s been a bit like that. We live in San Juan Capistrano and there was one small fire very close a week ago but the fire fighters put it out within a few hours. Definitely nerve wracking…

You’re very welcome. I appreciate the feedback because it almost always results in a better website for everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion. We started doing that not too long ago so more of this will come out, and in the future we’ll interview every artist who produces courses with us.

Be sure to follow our art magazine: https://canvas.nma.art/

There we often do interviews or features on our instructors and even other artists.

    Welcome, Breno.

Being self taught has its pros and cons. Make sure to patient with yourself since much of what you will be learning will feel very unnatural at first. I recommend you join start a sketchbook or 100 day challenge, and join a study group.

Welcome Jerry. We are your southern neighbors, down in Orange county.

We all struggle with consistent drawing. I’m sure that you will learn a lot here.

I recommend you start a 100 day challenge, or a sketchbook thread, or join a study group. Social accountability not only enriches the learning experience but it also increases your chance for success!

This looks great. I’m sorry to hear about your loss.

I also get bored rendering. It can help to not work too long in one session, because you may get bored and draw more lazily (wrapping it up without realizing it to move on). Maybe work shorter sessions over several days to stay fresh and interested. Spend more time in the initial stages so you’re excited to execute a great drawing.

Nice work, Mirian. My recommendation would be to try to design even clearer shadow to light shapes during your posterization stage.

We are shooting a course like this in October with the amazing Miles Yoshida.

It’s in the works. Currently we have a beta of the 3D content and a beta of the video library. We are working on it! In the mean time if you have any suggestions for the app, please make them here!

(and in case you’re wondering a smart tv, tvOS app is also planned)

The way you drew the right scapula is more accurate in the last image. As the right shoulder join flexes, the scapula swings forward and we’re seeing it almost edge on in this case.

Vansh, It’s true that layered (indirect) paintings can achieve optical effects that alla prima painting simply can’t. These effects are hard to appreciate by looking at reproductions in books or online but if you can see the master paintings in museums in person, you’ll notice the effects right away.

So it isn’t as much about “realism” as it is the effect which creates a certain experience with your viewers. My advice (and I know this is difficult with COVID) but try to see as many of these master works in person as you can. You’ll get a better idea of what your own inspiration is and what technique you’d like to study.

All prima or direct painting is more common in contemporary work. It’s faster, can be considered better for sketch like or painterly effects, and it’s the norm. Indirect painting is more difficult, takes much longer because your work has to try and it’s harder to learn how to do it.

    The choice ultimately is yours.

Welcome, to the community deep (and Romel)! A great way to get started here is to start a 100 day challenge and try to join a study group. I look forward to seeing work from both of you. 🙏🏼

    Welcome, Christian!

You can start a 100 day challenge here on the community forums. You can also join a study group.

I along with a few other instructors will give critiques and advice as much as we are able. 🙏🏼
