Chris, thank you so much for taking the time to help me! This was my very first portrait in oil. I’ve done mostly sea/landscapes and birds. I was scared to do this and so glad I put it up for critique. I’m writing down all your notes and taking them into my next oil. The changes you made totally make sense and I appreciate your expertise. Can’t wait to try another portrait! My blessings to you!!
Thanks, David! Nice observation!! I did switch from my toned papers to white sketch because I am running low on my toned papers. I think they are both the same smoothness. However, I did switch to a softer graphite mixed with a soft charcoal. I think this may have caused those tones to be deeper. I did the same with my days 34-35 (below), however in my slight rush with filling in my shade the charcoal streaked a bit. I’m still getting used to the change.

As wonderful as the 100 day challenge is I find it to be not just a challenge for our skill building but also a challenge for our psyche. I believe mixing it up or taking a quick break from the actual challenge to be healthy! And doing so actually keeps us in check to maybe apply what we have been challenging ourselves with. You are doing great, David – always enjoy seeing your progress.
Elena, this a beautiful. Love the tonal colors!good luck with the challenge, looking forward to seeing your work!
Really enjoying your animals and progress, Natacha! I truly appre iate the inspiration!
Wow! He’s awesome. Thanks for introducing him!

Helped me with pencil pressure for tonal values and, like Bill said, working that pressure on different papers. Also was when I found out I preferred carbon pencil over charcoal, lol!
Marcos this is fantastic! I haven’t ventured deep into sculpture yet so cannot give any insight. However I love your handling of the details. His wrinkles and folds, really so pleasing to see. Hope you get some well deserved critique on this from a master!
