    Hey Josh,

I totally see where you are coming from, and honestly I think you would really enjoy Mark Westermoe’s Reilly method courses, as well as Glen Vilppu’s figure drawing courses. Glen even has some helpful stand alone videos here on NMA where he breaks down some of Ruben’s drawings, so those are definitely worth a look as well. Another great set is Steve Huston’s advanced head drawing courses, which have lessons on drawing idealized male and female heads and hairstyles. Hope this was useful!

Thanks Raven! I actually am thinking I might enter the self portrait contest! I’m putting together something and depending on how it goes I might submit it!

Thank you Raven! I definitely think my next step will be to work on head painting more! Hopefully after following some more of the Joseph Todorovitch series I will be able to paint the volume of the head a lot better!

    Day 100,

For my final day of the challenge, I revisited my Bruce Lee portrait and continued to work on the structure and likeness. This challenge has been a lot of fun, and has helped me better internalize head proportions, facial features and the muscles that contribute to expressions, and the interaction between the subject and the frame. Thanks to NMA for hosting this challenge and providing a platform for sharing and feedback!

    Day 99,

I wanted to do one more animal portrait before completing the challenge after tomorrow, so today I did a mixed media portrait of a blue jay. Its not as refined or technically accurate as I wanted it to be, but it gave me a chance to explore a combination of new media, including acrylic ink and posca brand acrylic paint markers. I also did most of the drawing freehand with pen and brush pen so as to challenge myself to be more considerate of the lines I create and be more economical with my mark making! This was also my first time using hot press watercolour paper, which was an interesting experience!

    Day 98,

Today I worked on improving a portrait from my celebrity portrait series of model Kendal Jenner. I’m definitely trying to put what I’ve learned from Steve Huston and others about scaling back detail when it comes to drawing female faces. I’m still working on the structure and the subtle expression, but I’m enjoying using the triad of primary colours as my colour scheme for a change!

    Day 97,

Today I worked on refining my Amy Winehouse portrait. I’m really happy with the likeness and the style of it, but I know that I still have a ways to go! I used a combination of Procreate and Photoshop for this one, which was an interesting experience!

    Day 96,

Today I worked on a recent portrait, introducing some refined linework, blocking in notan masses, and exploring some potential colour combinations.

    Day 95,

Today I did a speed paint value study of a Dean Cornwell portrait. Cornwell is a master of both indicating planes and doing it with subtlety, so I wanted to see if I could emulate this approach. Once again the edges are quite unrefined, but having stopped myself after half an hour as part of the exercise, I was more focussed on capturing the major masses.

    Day 94,

Today I revisited a portrait I did a few months ago of opera singer Andrea Bocelli. I still like the style and colour selection, but as is the case with most of my portraits, the structure can always be improved. Andrea’s music is great for listening to while drawing and painting by the way!

    Day 93,

Today I did a 30 minute value study of one of Joseph Todorovitch’s beautiful portraits. I wanted to experiment with a digital alla prima approach, so I didn’t do a drawing and instead painted in the large notan masses first, then went for the large planes, then indicated some of the details with the little time I had less, as I wanted to keep myself strictly to 30 minutes so as to force myself to make design decisions and consider the overall read more than the details. The edge control and proportions definitely need work in my study, but I’m happy with how much information I was able to capture in a limited amount of time!

    Day 92,

Today I continued to work on the Bruce Lee portrait, manipulating the lighting a bit, and working more on the orbital region.

    Day 91,

Today I continued to develop my Bruce Lee portrait. I made some revisions to the eyes that are extremely wonky, but other than the orbital region, I’m seeing some improvements in the likeness, and I definitely know what my next steps will be in terms of revision and refinement!

    Day 90,

Today I continued to work on my portrait of actress Zendaya, improving upon the structure and the 3/4 view. I still have a lot of work to do, but I’m really liking how the warm analogous colour palette is coming together, and I think it suits her personality quite well!

    Day 89,

Today I did a portrait of a friend of mine, experimenting with some limited colour in coloured pencils. The aesthetic was inspired by Roy Lichtenstein’s comic themed pop art.
