April 14, 2020 at 2:41 pm in reply to: Steve Huston Free Critiques Livestream Tuesday at 2PM PDT #469472Day Five,
Today I decided to do my daily figure drawing in colour, using toned paper. I used a combination of indigo blue coloured pencil and white chalk, with a tiny bit of white gel pen here and there. The technique is inspired by a combination of Steve Huston and the Danny Galeote video where he uses a combination of hatching and tone to draw Michelangelo sculptures. I would like to draw larger in the future because I feel the details could use a lot of work. I enjoyed experimenting though with simultaneous contrast, and varying values slightly within the shadow areas to imitate variations in skin tone.
Hi Spiren!
This is a really nice drawing! I think you have just the right amount of detail, and your edge control is really good. The only thing that jumps out at me is that the neck looks quite long, especially because the subject is looking up, which would cause the back and back facing neck muscles to compress a bit more. Since this is such a nice drawing, you could always take it into photoshop and nudge the neck down a bit. Nice work though, and great stylistic choice with the craft paper!

Hi Josseline,
Thank you for your feedback! I actually wasn’t familiar with Ben Fenske before NMA, but I really like his teaching style, and the course is really useful for more specific things that often get glossed over when people are talking about landscapes, like how to actually paint a cloud. Also, thanks for the note about the exhibition, as I am really interested in learning more about landscape painting, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt to familiarize myself with the experts!

Thanks Joshua! I will check out those composition videos!

Day Four,
Today’s colour illustration is a quick landscape scene. I’m experimenting with digital oil brushes, and using some of the massing techniques I learned from the Ben Fenske landscape series. The details could use a lot of refinement, but my main goal was to break the image down into manageable zones of value and colour. I haven’t done a lot of landscape work in the past, but I find that I’m really enjoying it since I started the Ben Fenske series!
Day Three,
Hi everyone! For day three’s colour illustration I decided to do another dino, this time experimenting with a dramatic comic book aesthetic. I really like using a complimentary orange-blue scheme, and with this piece, I tried to push towards having one complement dominate, in this case the blue or cool tones. I also experimented with introducing some selective yellow and red accents for interest. It’s still a bit rough, so I’d like to maybe go back in down the road and keep working on it.
Thank you everyone! I really like the idea of pushing the graphic shapes. Maybe for one of my upcoming daily challenges I will try and take this even further. I appreciate the feedback!

Hi Paul,
I really like your hatching, and these figures are really dynamic. Since you’re working on toned paper, something you might even want to try is taking a white gel pen if you have one, and hatching in the light area with it. Just another way to add some more volume and energy! Keep up the great work!
April 11, 2020 at 2:57 pm in reply to: [COMPLETED] Birgith’s 100 Day Challenge: Still life painting #463305Hi Birgith,
I absolutely love these still life paintings! Your texture and colour choices are really striking. I could see these hanging in a cafe because they really create a sense of atmosphere. I would recommend checking out the work of illustrator Gary Kelley if you like this kind of image, because his colour choices really remind me of yours. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait to see more!

Hi Josseline!
So glad to see that you are practicing your cross contours and cylinders! I love drawing birds myself so I love these drawings! If you like drawing birds and are looking to challenge yourself even more, I would recommend checking out the Helmeted Hornbill! Keep up the good work!

Day Two,
Hi everyone! For today I did a quick still life painting(digital) using a monochromatic blue palette. I decided to stop short of going more detailed for this one, because the main aim was to explore how much I could achieve with just one colour range. This palette was inspired by one of Bill Perkin’s colour lectures from his Composition for Visual Artists series(can’t remember the exact video right now, unfortunately!)
Thank you Josseline! I look forward to hearing more of your feedback!

Thanks Joshua! I’m really excited about this project!
