    Day 88,

Today I did some ballpoint pen head sketches in my sketchbook.

    Day 87,

Today I’m working on a portrait of Garth Brooks that I started quite awhile ago, developing the structure and enhancing the expression. I’m definitely really liking Procreate’s painterly qualities!

    Day 86,

Today I decided to change up my portrait process a bit, and go entirely with digital media for a change. I typically don’t do my construction sketches digitally and instead do them in pencil or verithin before scanning them and taking them into either procreate or Photoshop. In this case, I started from scratch in Procreate. I still enjoy drawing traditionally more because I can move my whole shoulder and really loosen up, but the one benefit of taking the whole process digital is that I can easily flip my image and be a little more critical during the sketch phase, which will ultimately save time later! This is just the first two sketch layers, but I do want to try and take this one to more of a finish, as I don’t have many non-celebrity portraits in my portfolio!

    Day 85,

Today I decided to try something different and paint some NC Wyeth heads in procreate. I challenged myself further by leaving the reference painting in colour, and attempting to deduce the values on my own. I mostly focussed on capturing the large simple planes. I really enjoyed this exercise, as I still draw a lot more often than I paint, and I want to continue to diversify my skillset!

    Day 84,

Today I continued to develop my portrait of actress Zendaya, introducing some tone and additional planes to help improve the sense of volume, while at the same time remaining consistent with the initial style. The structure still needs some work, but I’m liking this one so far!

    Day 83,

Today I continued to develop my portrait of the rockstar Meatloaf. I’m still working on developing the structure and expression, but so far I think the colours are definitely working to communicate his personality and type of music!

    Day 82,

Today I’m posting my progress on a portrait i’m working on of actress Lily Collins from one of her movies. I’m still working on the expression and the structure, but so far I’m liking the contrast between the warm colours of the figure and the cool colours of the environment.

    Day 81,

Today I challenged myself to draw like Kim Jung Gi with just a brush pen and no construction sketch, which was really difficult! I definitely think that doing this exercise is improving my dexterity though, so I expect to do a few more of these freehand timed portraits in the future!

    Day 80,

Today I thought Id try something completely different, but nonetheless head drawing/portrait related. I decided to apply the knowledge i’ve been accumulating about the human skull and see if I could make sense of the skull of one of our ape ancestors. My brother is an anthropology student, and supplies me with some great reference of human and proto human skulls! I unfortunately can’t remember the name of this specimen, but drawing it certainly got my brain working to problem solve and see if I could identify some of the important landmarks I’ve learned here on NMA!

    Day 79,

Today I decided to try and replicate the process that I’ve seen so far in Joseph Todorovitch’s portrait series, only instead I tried using some of the oil painting brushes I have for procreate. I’m really happy to see that the same principles essentially apply! I will definitely continue to practice massing in areas of darks, as I love how Joeseph blocks in the entire shadow area before adding some subtle indications for areas like the eyes. I’m only a couple lessons in, so this exercise is only as far as the shadow massing for the most part.

    Day 78,

Today I continued to work on my Zendaya portrait, exploring a little more with how a warm analogous scheme can be adjusted to create a broader range of warms and cools.

    Day 77,

Today I continued to work on my portrait of actress Zendaya Coleman, mostly testing some notan an relationships. I still need to improve on the structure, but right now I’m experimenting with exaggerating the temperature of the cheek region to communicate a sense of warmth and energy. This playing up of the red of the cheeks and nose is very popular in my particular field of illustration right now, but I am still interested in a likeness and some sense of realism, so I will look to apply some of the lessons I am learning from Theodor Todorovitch’s portrait painting class as a I continue to experiment and refine!

    Day 76,

Today I continued to adjust my editorial portrait of India’s Prime Minister Modi, removing the patterning on the clothing that takes away from the focus on the face, and improving upon the structures of the head. It’s still got a long way to go, but I’m starting to see the likeness improve, which is really important for this type of portrait in particular!

    Day 75,

Today I did a speed paint of a portrait, limiting myself to twenty minutes. As I don’t paint nearly as much as I draw, I’m happy that I’m starting to think less about minute details, and more about large planes and value relationships. I limited myself to a monochromatic palette, but I’m really fascinated about how varying between saturated tints/shades and neutrals can be used to suggest different temperatures all without using more than one hue. I got a little carried away with the rim lights on the hair, but overall, what was interesting is that none of the other values got very far past the 50% range, yet there is readable contrast, which is something I want to explore in future portraits!

    Day 74,

Today I continued to work on my Bruce Lee portrait, painting over the eye area to refine the structure. This is still really rough and drawn in, but I’m looking to use the eventual eye shape and brow furl expression to help strengthen the likeness.
