    DAY 60

Started on the week 8 assignment for the anatomy master class, which is to draw the flesh layer of the front, rear and side views of the figure without life references. We will see how it turns out, but I really want to knock this one out of the park.

Really nice work Jan. Your drawing is very good, and I think your rendering is almost there, but is just a little bit flat. For my money there’s not quite enough tonal distinction between the shadows and the lights. Remember that the lightest part of your shadows will always be draker than the darkest part of you lights (for an object of a given local colour). I think there are one or two areas where that relationship doesn’t hold in a couple of your drawings, or at least it’s not stated as strongly as it could be.  My feeling is that you are generally over-modelling your lights, and they’re starting to look a bit grubby. You could try carefully rollling a kneaded eraser over the light areas to light off some of the tone without destroying all that work, then going back in a refining things with a harder pencil. The potential is there to make these really lovely though.

Hi Composite, good luck with the challenge. I think you’ve made a great start and I like that you are keeping your focus very specific. It’s bound to yield results. Regarding the quality of your lines and your ability to summarise forms economically, I can absolutely empathise as it’s something I also strive for. The former will start to come with practise, so just keep going. I can also highly recommend idle doodling as a way to improve your control with a pen or pencil. Doodle cubes, pyramids, spheres and other shapes while you’re watching TV or otherwise chilling out. It will have a noticable effect on your technique over time. As far as summarising form goes, I think that comes with knowledge of the form more than anything – a deeper understanding of structure will allow you to better determine which elements are most important to express the form efficiently. I can do this pretty well with heads, but I struggle with the whole figure – which is why I’m here!

It’s a long journey, so just keep in mind always that hard work is more important than inate talent and the road to success is littered with many failed efforts. Keep it up!

Almost finished Ethans portrait now. Might do a little more tomorrow, but will probably be back to assignments until next weekend.

    DAY 57

I’ve done some more work on the double portrait today but I don’t think you’d notice much change, so here are some little figure studies for a painting idea. You can definitely see my weaknesses when it comes to drawing the figure from imagination here.

    DAYS 42 – 52

Ok, I reeaaaally let the posting slip, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been putting the work in! I had a lot of catching up to do on my work for the Anatomy Master Class (still not quite there yet) and have been working away on the commission at the same time, alternating between the two. I really need to figure out how I’m going to divide my time between course work and personal/professional projects, as I probably spent a bit too much time on the latter at the expense of the former.

    DAY 38

I’m pretty knackered from traveling today, so a somewhat cursory effort in afraid. A five and a ten minute pose from daily life drawing.
