    Loved his portrait painting course — one of NMA’s best courses imo. Colour used to scare me; now it’s a little less scary. He explains things so well. Thank you, Joseph! (Also, have just seen the outline of “from paper to canvas” course — really looking forward to learning about how he paints figures. And keen for more figure painting tutorials in general. I find it quite hard finding figure painting tutorials online).

    This is quite a charming drawing. Very expressive; feels like a place I’d like to visit 🙂 Good job on the aerial perspective too!

    These are very sensitive drawings.  They have strong feeling to me, which I don’t think is easy to achieve. Great gesture and line quality.

    The main thing that jumps out at me (in terms of critique) is the thigh on the boy in the first picture. It reads as being too big to me (but may just be the pose). Perhaps you could be a bit clearer about the planes of the thigh, too; it seems a little flat compared to the rest of the drawing.

    Oh, and I REALLY LOVE the third drawing. Keep scrolling back to look at it. 🙂 Delicious lines and rhythms. Keep it up!

    @dominiquedeve Thanks!

    @janstannard  Thanks very much for the feedback. You’re right, that thumb is too big. Will make some adjustments. 🙂

    @ttwarner  Thanks for the encouragement. I primarily used Gioconda Chalk Pencil Light Sepia (I love this pencil so much), and built up the darks a bit more with some dark sepia. Then a bit of white chalk for the lightest lights.
