Thanks so much for taking the time, Chris. Really appreciate your time for the draw over and comments, that’s really helpful.
Now you’ve pointed it out, along with bringing the hairline down and the cheekbone out a little more, it really makes sense. Amazing how you can’t see things yourself sometimes…
I’m not a professional, so take anything I say with a healthy dose of scepticism!
The main thing that first strikes me is that it looks a bit flat.I’m not getting a sense of the eyes being deeper into the head than the forehead or the nose coming out towards me.
Also, the shading is a bit confusing now I look at it a bit more. Some of your darkest darks are on the left side of the elements, like the fabric or forehead, but the right eye looks to me more in shadow than the left, which kind of makes it contradict itself.
So, in my (in no way expert) opinion, I’d suggest trying to make your shading more consistent. I think for the eyes, it’s a case of trying to remember that the darkest light should still be clearly lighter than the lightest shadow… if that makes sense… try to keep a separation in value between the shadows and lights.
Hope that helps! :/
I agree with Thomas. I think these are missing a clear que to what Steve Huston calls ‘box logic’, the appearance of turning of the forms in 3d space. Did you start each of these as simple ‘constructions’ or by putting down the outline as best you could and filling in the details?
If it’s the outlines, then I’d suggest building the portraits out from the big simple shapes first , then ‘building’ the smaller ones onto each of those.
I am not a professional, so take my advice with a pinch of your own judgement! 🙂
Sure, I’d be more than happy to help.
Just let me know what you need me to do, and any specific things / situations you wanted poked.
Cheers,
Gavin
Awesome. Looks forward to it.
Let me know if you need a beta tester! 🙂

Hi, thanks for the reply.
To be clear the image focussing on eyes mostly in blue here:
It’s the image used as the header image for the Constructive drawing course, but doesn’t seem to be from any part of that course (that I’ve found…)
That’s the lesson I’m interested in tracking down but have been unable to do so so far..
Cheers,
Gavin
