    Jeff

A few digital studies of Jeff in prep for a couple of limited-palette watercolor studies tomorrow. Sketched in Infinite Painter on iPad.

Days 11-12 | Mark Westermoe: The Portrait in Watercolor | Homework 12-13 – Reference: Jeff

    Jeffx2

Two value studies using Ivory Black.  Trying to focus on paint application. Mangled the mouth on the first one pretty bad, so I guess we get to see him with a mustache!

Days 13-15 | Caricature Attempt – Governor Kate Brown

    Kate

I want to develop some caricature skills as the head studies continue. I was surprised by the necessary observation of eccentricities, and the design work involved in the subsequent reconstruction of the face. I had fun with it and intend to explore some more angles and subjects as I continue.

Days 14-15 | Charles Dana Gibson Copies

    Gibson Copies

I’m a big fan of Charles Dana Gibson’s pen work… so I thought I’d do some copies to inform my line work. Even with the soluble lay-in, I found his style to be impossible to emulate without working at a much greater tempo.

Day 18 | Watercolor Sketch from Life

    Watercolor Sketch

The face got a little muddy towards the end… I think a larger brushed base treatment could eliminate some unnecessary / dirty brushwork.

Days 19-20 | Watercolor and Ink Sketches – Reference: Will

    2 Figures

Experimenting with applying the palettes from the portrait class to full figures. Hoping to improve and simplify future sketches using this combination of watercolor, fine liner, and brush pen.

Wow… Hey, thanks from a fellow Oregonian! That means a lot because I really admire the strategy you are following on your thread… I think you have put yourself in the fast lane for growth!

I feel like I have made several strides in the past three weeks through daily practice and look forward to watching your progress… maybe I’ll get some ideas. 🙂

Day 22 | Ink Figure Practice – Reference: Tiffiney

    Tiffiney

I’m trying to gain some agility and expressiveness with pen and ink. Without an eraser, it’s difficult to keep the drawing clean… I need tons more practice at this, but I think it will help bring a greater level of mindfulness to my process and help my drawing skills with other media.

Days 23-24 | Ink Figure Practice – Reference: Tiffiney

    Tiffiney pen

I kind of lost a little steam with this approach… Still trying to get a good feel for the angle I have to use with a liner pen and the inability to do light strokes. It was a good exercise and I think I’ll return to it after some more practice with a more forgiving medium.

Days 25-26 | Ballpoint Pen Figure Practice – Reference: Lillias

    Lillias 5x

I haven’t used a ballpoint pen for a while.  It was nice to be able to vary the strokes a bit more than I could with the liner pen.

Thanks, man! I planning to do some more ballpoint for figure study going forward… or at least until my pen runs out!
