    Day 15

Today I focused mostly on the videos. After that, I had only enough time to work on the Reilly method diagram and a 5 minute sketch.

    Hi, Elya,

Thank you! You mean the drawing board on the table? I got that from Amazon.

    Day 14

Today was the last of the Expression exercises. Tomorrow it’s on to head abstractions using the Reilly method. I spent my entire evening organizing my studio for my one year intensive. It was a lot more work than I thought it would be, but I’m ready.

This is very nice. The section between the sun and the top of the top bird’s back is especially exciting. It would be kind of nice if there were some spatial depth between the birds. The little baby ones and the boat are almost lost. Nevertheless this is so pretty as well as dynamic.

    Day 13

This is the 3rd of the 4 studies I’m doing on expressions in the Beginning Head Drawing class.  Even though it’s a drawing class, I decided to do the exercises in gouache because I’m transitioning into focusing on painting.

    Day 12

Today I was able to get through two of the four facial expression/emotion exercises in the beginning head drawing class. I used pan gouache.

    Day 11

Still working on the Beginning Head Drawing class. The assignment is facial expressions. I’m going to do these in watercolor, just for fun. But these are the preparatory sketches in water-soluble graphite.

    Day 10

Today I finished noses and mouths. So, I continued on with the Beginning Head Drawing class. I’m on the Reilly method now. I really like that the class is taught by 4 different teachers. That change in perspective with a new module and a new teacher makes me feel like the topic is well-covered.

    Day 9

Today I spent most of my allotted art time in ordering supplies and preparing my studio for the intensive, which starts in about 3 weeks. However, I did manage to polish off the eye portion of the features exercise and start the noses. As boring as some of these art exercises are, they really do help.

    Day 8

Today I did not have a lot of time, but I continued on with the individual features exercise. It was much easier today because I treated it simply like an exercise, numbering the paper and doing each feature individually. I only did eyes today, but eventually I’ll complete the nose and mouth as well. 30 each.

I’m starting a one-year art intensive at the end of the month, in addition to my normal full time day job, so I’ll have to see if I can continue this particular challenge. But in the meantime, I’m making the most of the time I DO have!

    Day 7

I finished the likeness exercise and the went on to the facial features exercise. Yuck. I found the features exercise really unsatisfying. I’m realizing that I have a weakness in terms of drawing features out of context. Even trying to draw a bit of a face around them didn’t really work. I think that’s why I can’t draw out of my imagination yet. So, as yucky as it is, I need to keep working on this weakness until it’s no longer a stumbling block.

    Hi Jan!!

My old New Masters friend. I appreciate the welcome back. Thank you, I’m in an experimentation mode right now, so I appreciate the feedback. I’ve always been drawn to muted colors and black and white, but it was really fun playing with color. I will definitely check out Alayne Sahar because I want to start moving more in the direction of vibrancy and color. Thanks for the tip.

    Day 6

Still working on the Beginning Head Drawing class. Today I worked on the likeness drawing and spent some time setting up my Facebook page. I have one more likeness pose from that lesson which I hope to complete tonight.
