Day 15: for a change of pace I Started Karl Gnass’s course today, and wow this is fantastic 🙌. Was drawing along but didn’t make it all the way through the 1st lesson. But there are clearly some issues happening with these heads, don’t know what I was thinking… i really need more progress with difficult angles, expressions. Need to be More focused on the volumes, getting too caught up in the small stuff, totally throws the tracking of the face.

Day 14: started pretty good, did some skulls from Michael hamptons book and started Glenn Vilppus head course which was great. but I got interrupted, and discouragingly I didn’t come back until way too late, where I made these heads, didn’t give them the needed  thought or energy.

Day 13: not much today, but I think Ive identified an issue. The jaw on some of my faces can be really wrong! And that’s one of the very most basic important structures to get right! I plan to remedy this asap. I haven’t made the time for many lessons lately so this is top priority to get at.

Day 12: lots I could say, but it’s late. I started too late in the day yet again, starting is always the hardest! Please I wouldn’t try to decipher my ugly notes lol, was just trying to think out loud, didn’t really think it through. And that’s basically the issue at hand in my drawings :). The trying to think part is good, I can clearly see some very wrong things happening, anatomy problems, not strong enough form, etc. I really didn’t want to post these figures because they just aren’t presentable, and clearly show my carelessness. For example all the sloppy searching by laying down pointless lines, bad habit. I keep trying to correct my wrong lines with more close lines which just makes everything an unclear mess! Any help on this and other things I’ve missed would be much appreciated.

On my form, I’ve continually been feeling that my figures are flat. I have always drawn from pictures, and I’m finally realizing that this is a fault that comes with pictures. I can imagine and understand why drawing from life is so much better. It’s harder to draw from pictures because you have to really think harder and visualize the existing solidity within the picture, or else everything’s flat!

for the faces, I feel like I’m getting a better handle on things, but I still occasionally find myself focusing in on one area too much thus making things badly disproportionate. Another bad practice I’ve been noticing is I somehow skew the head at times? The one on the right has it, and it’s just wrong. looking in the mirror helps catch it for me. The jaw and chin aren’t following the right perspective I think. Jeez.

Day 11: nothing too noteworthy here, pretty generic, and that awkward empty space is bothering me.. started late. I’ll probably try and do more figures tomorrow. Or something new and interesting!

Wow this is so awesome! Comic art is what made me want to learn drawing in the first place, love the way you studied it! Captures the essence so well. John Buscema is one of my major inspirations. Also those bridgeman studies are so fantastic! So dynamic, that and your notes on it make me want to study him, but I don’t think I’m at that point quite yet haha. Great stuff 👌

Day 10: One of these heads is from imagination, can you guess which one? Lol. Kinda like em! Was running low on motivation today. Did some cybermen for fun. The one on the bottom is definitely the best.

Day 9: started a new sketchbook! But I am once again struggling. The proportions on most of these are awful abominations, I have to relearn how to draw heads that aren’t tiny. I commonly find myself confused, lost, and disoriented trying to draw bigger. But I guess I just have to work through the extreme discomfort.

Day 8: things got real. I tried verily to draw bigger, and it has revealed how I use drawing small as a crutch, to hide mistakes. And The sad part is that they aren’t even that much bigger!! why! It probably isn’t good that I’ve drawn even smaller for a long time. Have to break the bad habit! Keep trying even though it’s uncomfortable! I figured I should post them all So here are the resulting attempts. Please send help. Lol, I think I can get inside my own head, which can be demoralizing and counter productive.

Thankfully though, I  started watching some lessons from Charles hu on the skull and a bit of Steve Houston on the eye socket and that helped get my mind Somewhat better on track. This is a wake up call that I have to really devote the time to these courses, it feels like sometimes I have forgotten everything! It’s just hard to get started…

Congratulations!  Seeing your insights, hard work, and progress have been very inspirational and beneficial. It’s helped me reflect more on how important it is to always be reinventing myself! Great stuff, looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks Christopher! I really appreciate it, hearing someone else’s thoughts is really helpful and motivational. And I thank you verily for the support! 🙏 The “style” or whatever it is isn’t really intentional I think? It just happens haha. Maybe it’s the result of my simplification attempts, but it’s probably due to my lack of knowledge, or some deeper issue. My aim is to solidify the real 3D forms and planes best I can, trying to get it right by correct understanding, but not necessarily perfect photo-realism per se.

I think my eyes In particular get real inaccurate, need to work on it. I just don’t want to excuse myself from fixing my mistakes because “its my style” lol. And I am trying to be more loose, but I need to make sure that doesn’t mean being careless.

Also, I appreciate the wise advice in trying to focus on one thing to work on. Maybe I’ll work on whats wrong with my eyes! Figuring out how the lid wraps around the far eye can be very difficult! Or really just wrapping the lids around the eyes in general!

Anyway much thanks, I’ll keep trying, and I agree posting and writing on here is really helpful self examination!

Day 6: I guess I just wasn’t feeling it with this first page. ಠ_ಠ But thankfully i had some fun with the yoda page, certainly happier with the way it turned out. I need to learn to loosen up and just enjoy the process.

Day 5: I think I can already feel some improvement, and it’s only day 5! Here’s a few figures, not very happy with them. Once again I think I’m being too sloppy and pressing way too hard too early. When I should just be quickly ghosting around with the shoulder to get a better sense for what I’m doing, I instead keep pressing harder and harder. Need to be lighter, more careful, not necessarily slower but more thoughtful. The lines with the pen get really bad. 😬 But please any thoughts on things I’m missing or things I need to work on, let me know! And sorry about this image quality… I’ll try to work on it.
