Day 21
Today I focused on head anatomy exercises, mainly on the muscles of the head. I did a drawing based on goldfinger’s cadaver head, which is an assignment of Ilya’s anatomy of the head and neck course. After that, I spent some time creating more refined sketches of my orcish character, as well as more positions in the head turnaround.
Day 20
At this day I drew just a few sketches. I wanted to know if I could remember all the important bones of the skull and draw them from imagination. I did only a profile view, but I was happy to see that I could already do it from imagination in a satisfactory way.
The second drawing is from a guy in the subway

Day 19
Today’s been a really good day. In the past months I spent too much time studying and watching classes, but I didn’t really dedicated any time at all to creation. So I decided to focus on some personal concept art projects, designing characters and environment. This is my first attempt at creating a character. He’s an orc druid. Here is my ideation for the head/face and also some head turnarounds (still in progress).
Day 17
Today I watched the last classes from Renaissance head drawing and focused on the last assignment. First I did some 5 minute warm-up drawings (graphite on toned paper) and then some 45 minute ones (sanguine and conté white crayon on toned paper).
I also had the chance to draw some people on the subway today. It was a really fun experience to do these quick studies from life.
Day 14
Today was a really productive day. I spent a lot of time watching lectures from Ilya’s Anatomy of the head and neck course and also drawing some skulls and bones. It’s awesome how anatomy can complement the structural studies. I feel like I’m getting to a deeper level of knowledge with head drawing.
First I drew the cranial and facial bones (only those that affect the external aspect of the skull), then I moved to a cephalometric points study and wraped up with some skull drawings from observation (photoshop) and from imagination (toned paper).
Day 11
Today I continued the assignment for “Anatomy of the head and neck” course. As the last post, the goal was to study the structure and bones of the human skull.
I had a really good time with these and I’m looking forward to the next steps of the course.
I did two complete skull drawings for now, one in profile (yesterday) and another one in 3/4, and I feel that this exercise helped me to get more acquainted with the skull.
Day 09
Today I have put the knowledge built in the last days to good use making some more studies of the facial features.
I followed the same method used for the eye region studies.
First I analyzed the structural forms and planes of the nose and mouth region, based on day 08 studies. After that, I used this knowledge to analyze photographs of the facial features of interest. Then, at least, I drew those features from observation, based on photo reference.
Day 08
Today I went through some more planar studies, starting to focus on the other facial features. I didn’t really spend much time on the exercises, but I mananged to begin the structural studies of the mouth, nose and ear.
Also, I’m starting one more head drawing course! Anatomy of the head and neck with Ilya Mirochnik. Really excited with this one.
On the next few days I plan to keep studying the structure and planes of the facial features, starting to give some focus to anatomy of the skull and neck as well.
Day 07
Still focused on the eye region. Today my goal was to study how different eye movements change the shapes around the eye, and turns out it really changes a lot. The eyelid shapes are really affected by the roundness of the cornea and the outer corner of the eye tends to follow vertical movements. In this type of movement the eye muscles also affect the volume of the upper/lower eye region, making them more or less prominent.
For this study I worked digitally, analyzing photos at first. Then I made some drawings from observation, focusing on a structural approach.
