Day 11: compressed chalk on brown study paper. This was done again within 30 minutes. I kept it very simple. Also because I did not like the rough surface of the paper together with the chalk. No room for refining details, but maybe that is good since I only have 30 minutes….Day 11

Day 10: pastel on dark pastelpaper. This time I tried to mass in the light shapes on black paper with one colour only. I managed this within 30 minutes. Although the proportions of the figure are not entirely correct, I felt like sharing this anyway. The exercise of massing in lights on black paper was not that easy but again I learned so much.

Day 9, pastel on pastel paper

I started with the intention to only mass in the light shapes on dark toned paper and found myself fiddling with colouring the details of the light masses…..and thus took me more then 30 minutes. Tomorrow will give it another try to mass in the light shapes on dark paper within 30 minutes.Day 9

Charcoal on paper. Had a little more difficulty with this one, since most of the figure is in light. Then it is very hard to resist the details in the light. Maybe I should not have applied tone in the light masses……

Compressed pastel on smooth drawing paper. I kept to the 30 minutes.

With this drawing I have set the timer and stopped at 30 minutes. Maybe I did some correction on the back, since that was a difficult part to mass in. But that lead me to see the box-logic that I need to master in the coming drawings. Using box-logic in massing in the volumes I learned to be really key. Box-logic, different plane=different value, all of this begins to make more sense now….

Hi Jeanette, just watch the videos of Susan Lyon. She really gives a clear instruction on how to keep your drawings simple.

Charcoal on charcoal paper. Now the backside of the paper but the tooth is still grainy. Also tried to keep to the 30 minutes. Maybe I spent a teeny tiny few minutes more……

So I switched to regular drawing paper with a smooth surface today. That works better for massing in the darks with charcoal. I must admit, massing in took me 30 minutes but after that I spent maybe another 60 minutes of and on on the details because it is so much fun to do!

Add-on to my previous post: this was made about 4 years ago, when I just subscribed to NMA.

Wow! Sounds like my story: giving up my career to do…..what…..? I only knew that I desperately wanted to learn how to draw and paint, and this urge is still there. Just follow your bliss, Andre, because this portrait looks realy promising!

So again a drawing on newspaper. This time in compressed pastel combined with conte a paris, sanguine. Again I find myself more drawing than massing in shadow and light, so I probably will try a different paper material tomorrow.

Used different type of paper (newspaper quality) and compressed charcoal. The paper makes smutching different then the paper I used yesterday. The marks are not erased as easily charcoal paper so the result is more sketchier……

    Hi Brian,

I will be using primarily soft pastels like Conte a Paris and compressed pastel (squared sticks). Because they smutch so nice and do not stain that much so you can correct easily. Lovely that you are taking the same challenge! Looking forward to see your updates. Regards, Jeanette
