Day 91 Picked up Conté again, first time in ages. I feel a bit better about using it, but I still don’t love it – feels very unforgiving. At any rate, I tried to draw a pose from imagination and things fell apart for the far side. Then tried a portrait.

    Hi Vera.
Like your “ink and wash” sketches very much.
Interesting to see your color work )

Day 93 Revisiting Amy’s seated pose, from my first ever attempt at figure drawing back in November. I guess it’s an improvement, although not as much as I’d hoped. I’ve found that poses that I had a really hard time with the first time around are still very challenging!

Day 94 One portrait, two attempts. Made the face mask too narrow in both. But interesting how little marks change demeanor.

Hi Vera. Great of you just putting in the days.

Regarding some of the narrow heads, I would warm-up/take time doing simple diagrams mapping out the general proportions and also constructing the heads as simple volumes (sphere, block, cylinder) from orthographic angles (top, sides, front, etc.) and THEN drawing them to a likeness. With those eyes, is it an exercise in inking? Or is it eye construction as well?

Hi Marcolino, thanks for the hints! As for the eye exercise, during Master Monday Joshua said something along the line of “you should be able to draw curves from all angles” – to practice making sweeping forms, even if that means inaccuracy on the path to mastery, rather than approach everything as short angles out of fear of getting it wrong. So that’s what I focused on during my practice yesterday, as I tend to make a lot of little scratchy marks. I think the original plate was meant to teach rendering form from basic lines.
