Sketching on Location

In week one, Glenn will guide you through sketching landscape thumbnails on location. He will begin by using the point-to-point method with graphite. Starting from a single point, you’ll build outward, focusing on the overall proportions and shapes of the subject.

In week two, you’ll focus on organizing landscape sketches into visual planes using the foreground, middle ground, and background. Visual planes create depth and movement in a sketch and avoid a flat composition.

In week three, you’ll learn how to approach landscape sketching from photographs while maintaining the spontaneity of working from life. You will learn how to move objects within a scene and even combine elements of different photos to enhance your compositions.

In week four, Glenn will bring you back outdoors to sketch foliage. Using graphite and a carpenter’s pencil, you will learn how to break down foliage into simple shapes and tonal masses.

In week five, you will focus on sketching the figure outdoors. Glenn will demonstrate how to capture the gesture and flow of the figure, before breaking down the forms using watercolor pencils and fountain pen.

In week six, you’ll focus on capturing the lively movement of children at play. Glenn will teach you how to simplify the gestures and forms of children in action by constructing simple volumes and cross-contours.

In week seven, Glenn will begin with a classroom lecture on the comparative anatomy of animals and humans, showing you the similarities and differences between multiple animals. Glenn will then take you to his ranch to sketch dogs and horses from life.
