Oil based clay must have a mold made and then cast in a permanent medium. Water based clay can be hollowed out carefully and then fired in a kiln – unless the work is in WED clay. WED clay does not fire and is used only to sculpt and then make a mold and cast.

Mathew – you won’t be removing the back iron for a piece like this in very soft oil-based clay. The piece would not support itself. The work is meant as a temporary piece and to make permanent would need to have a mold made and then cast in another medium. The backiron would then be ‘chased’ or removed from the final work and the whole plugged and resculpted to remove all reference to it in the final casting. Hope this helps!
