Marble Sculpting

In week one, Moritz explores the tools and techniques used in marble sculpture. Discover the various types of chisels, grinding discs, and hammers used in carving stone, and gain skills in sharpening tools.

In week two, you will be introduced to the process of blocking in the major measuring points of a marble sculpture. Instructor Moritz Moser will demonstrate how to use a pneumatic hammer on stone and guide you through a reductive sculpting process.

In week three, develop the major planes of the head under the guidance of Moritz. Learn how to establish measurements around the bust and begin carving out the basic silhouette of the face.

In week four, Moritz will show you how to block in the drapery around a bust. Utilize the pointing tool to take accurate measurements of the drapery and endpoints of the sculpture.

In week five, refine the measurements of the nose and eyes of a bust with Moritz. Learn how to work around delicate facial features with the pointing tool and chisels to bring them to life.

In week six, instructor Moritz Moser will teach you how to refine drapery in marble. You will learn how to define the contours of the sculpture and create volume.

In week seven, continue refining your marble bust with Moritz. Learn how to make adjustments using the measuring points established earlier in the sculpting process.

In week eight, Moritz will guide you through the process of refining the bust and creating subtle transitions in marble to bring it closer to completion. You will learn how to develop the unique characteristics of the bust as Moritz works on each facial form.

In week nine, add details to your marble bust with instructor Moritz Moser. Learn how to position shapes and forms accurately and take final measurements to complete the bust.

In this lesson, Moritz will guide you through the process of finishing your marble bust. You will learn how to make any final adjustments to the facial features, as well as how to use hand files to smooth out the surface of the marble. Finally, you will discover how to add a hanging apparatus to your completed marble bust.

In week 11, learn how to cut down marble to scale for a sculpture with Moritz. Walk through the steps for resizing a marble slab for sculpting and use the grinder to remove large chunks of marble.

In week 12, Moritz will guide you through the process of creating a hand sculpture in marble. You will begin by using the measuring tool to establish the correct proportion. Moritz will then demonstrate how to carve out the large masses of the hand and begin refining the wrist.

In week 13, develop the forms of hands in marble with instructor Moritz Moser. Refine the major shapes of the hand sculpture and take accurate measurements of individual fingers.

In week 14, Moritz will guide you through the process of completing a hand sculpture in marble. You will learn how to refine the forms using various sculpting tools and create soft transitions throughout the hand.
