In this lesson, NMA instructor Iliya Mirochnik will demonstrate techniques for capturing hair in a painting. Each session Iliya will set up new challenges and techniques for you to tackle. You will learn different approaches to painting hair while mixing traditional and digital concepts together in your paintings. Iliya will assign varying assignments for you to tackle, then give feedback on them in forthcoming sessions.

Join NMA instructor Iliya Mirochnik for an 8-week interactive Live Class, where you will learn the important concepts and theories for painting hair. Hair is often overlooked in portrait classes and has generated tons of questions from students about it. So we’re going to do a deep dive for eight sessions to get to the root of the problem! The class will begin with a lecture on cranial structure, hair theory, growth patterns, and terminology. You will proceed by painting various sculptures and making copies of old master paintings, analyzing the different treatments of hair by artists of the past. Finally, you will jump into making paintings of various hairstyles and colors. Each week, students will complete homework assignments that will be critiqued in the following class. This class will be using digital media, but all of the principles transfer into traditional techniques.

Earn a digital Certificate of Completion when you complete this Live Class and submit all assignments for review before the end of term. Certificate details are located in the Assignments tab of this lesson page. Additionally, students who fulfill the certificate requirements will receive a special badge for display in the NMA community forums and Discord server.
