average size

is there an average size I should be working in when painting figures

I am using a sketchbook, 8×11 inches.  It makes figure painting difficult for me, but I was told I should be able to paint a figure on this size of paper with a broom.

when working small should I try to put in the facial features or leave the face entirely blank? I see some use only a cross hair, I was told not to do that.
