    DAY 64

Well, here’s what I submitted. Pleased overall, though I am sure there are many errors.

    DAYS 65 & 67

Started working back into Emily’s portrait, concentrating on the T-shirt.  Have knocked it back with a kneaded eraser a couple of times so, more work has gone into thi than it may appear. Trying to build up the tone gradually, and not rush into it.

    Thanks Daniel!

    DAYS 73 & 74

I’ve had to rework the right arm in Emily’s portrait, and am struggling with the hand. On to redraw… 9,887 or so? It’s honestly getting me down a little at this stage, and I was hoping to get this piece finished pretty soon. I’ll soldier on.

    DAY 75

Now trying to knit things together and soften a little with some background tone.

Folks, I am still going despite the lack of posts. I did have one day off, so this is work from days 76 – 79, despite 5 days having passed.

I put the portrait aside for a bit and went back to working on this thing. I’ve had to darken some areas as I’ve developed the background, and in the process I think I’ve messed up the finish a little here and there, but whatever. The main thing now is to finish it to the best of my ability and get on to the next, better one.

The figure drawing above immediately caught my eye in the forum thumbnails – it was the effect of the dark background behind the glowing figure that drew my intention. Wonderfully rendered too – I’m envious!

Mind me asking what paper you use? I bought some “fancy” paper to try some charcoal drawings but it tears so easily that it prevents much rework.

Thank you very much, Jac! The paper I’m using is toned tan Strathmore 400 series, from an 18″ x 24″ pad. It’s pretty nice and takes a reasonable amount of punishment. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a roll of the white version,  but they’re pretty hard to come by in my part of the world.

    DAY 80

Not finished with this yet, but have got pretty close and am putting it aside for a bit while I start anoth one, and I’ll come back to it in a bit and add any final touches.

Incredible as always Lewis! I love the portrait you put up on day 80! Such incredible control of values, you should be proud even if you think you messed some parts up, as you say. I don’t see nothing but a beautiful piece of work. Can’t wait to see what you do with this next one, which is already looking great. Thanks for leaving the measuring lines in, it helps to make a mental note in my brain, to do these things! 🙂

Thanks Luka! I’m pleased with the piece overall, just a couple of niggles that I find it hard to see past.

    DAY 83

forgot to post this yesterday – made a start on rendering
