In the final installment of Johanna Schwaiger’s first series at New Masters Academy, she makes decisions about the composition of the portrait. She sculpts a distinct set of plane changes at the sternum to distinguish the anatomy from the classical bust structure. The neck muscles and trapezius is sculpted, the eyes finished, and the brows […]
In the second lesson of David Simon’s figure sculpting series, he takes a few measurements from the model and starts adding clay to the armature. David considers the anatomy of the figure as he adds volume to the sculpture. After blocking in the major masses of the figure, he can begin to establish the gesture […]
Mark demonstrates an approach called underpainting or imprimatura, wherein the first layer of paint on the canvas serves as a base tone for the rest of the forms painted on top. In this lesson, Mark shows you how to apply your understanding of the planes of the head and the laws of light to make even the simplest of paintings “ring true.” In this case, he paints a portrait of the notoriously bullish financier J.P. Morgan.
A sculptor of international acclaim, David Simon’s career has ranged from life-size portraits and figures to massive bronze statues. Among others, he helped oversee the giant Leonardo da Vinci Horse project. David created maquette and sculptures for films such as Where the Wild Things Are, Fantastic Four, and Watchmen, and holds private workshops abroad and […]
Steve Huston will share with you his techniques for preparing materials, mark-making, and rendering a finish, all while explaining his thought processes! In this lesson, three different models pose for Steve. He chooses a body part or region that catches his eye and then demonstrates his approach to long pose charcoal drawings. He draws Rajiv’s […]
Mark begins with some general rules and tips for monochrome drawings– designing the shapes, the values we assign to them, and the edges between them. He then moves on to draw three shadow patterns on three heads based on the Reilly Abstraction. He incorporates three different lighting scenarios on these heads: form lighting, ambient lighting, and rim lighting.
In this series, master artist Steve Huston demonstrates his approach to long pose charcoal drawings at the NMA studio. He’ll share with you his techniques for preparing materials, mark-making, drawing warmup poses, arranging the model (Amy), and rendering a finish, all while explaining his thought processes! Steve Huston is an internationally renowned painter and draftsman. […]
Mark introduces Frank Reilly’s abstraction: a rhythmical representation of the shapes and forms of the head. Internalizing this model will give you an excellent starting point for any portrait or head drawing. Mark first explains a little bit of the history behind this abstraction, then moves on to show you how it can be applied to any given drawing or photo. Following that, he uses the abstraction and some tracing paper to demonstrate some portraits from the NMA and Drawthis! model reference libraries.
Join the NMA production team as they go on-location to capture the magnificent Glenn Vilppu drawing his horses, dogs, goats, sheep, llamas, and chickens at his California ranch! He begins by lecturing on the fundamental structural differences between species. Conceptualizing an animals anatomy will aid you in understanding their behaviors– this is important because you’re […]
