In this lesson, master draftsman and painter Danny Galieote demonstrates a technique for creating preliminary drawing studies for his personal work for fine-art galleries. You will learn how to use a combination of vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, black conté and white charcoal on a mid-toned paper. First, you will learn how Danny begins with a thumbnail sketch and then develops it into a larger drawing. Then you will be shown how Danny uses the vine charcoal and kneaded eraser in an exploratory fashion to find the right composition and tonal relationships. Finally, you will see how to develop form and push the final light and dark values with the black conté and white charcoal to bring the drawing to completion.
