    Hi Brit,

This is a cool piece! Where did you get your inspiration/s for it? Oh, I totally feel you on the art endurance thing. I’ve found I can only work up to the 10-15 hour time frame for paintings, which I know is no where near enough for a better developed piece. I need to up my game!

I like the colour palette. Maybe if you push the darks in the figure more, especially in the clothing, it’ll help push the lights out more and further clarify the mood you’re trying to capture. But overall I like it!

    Hi Dietmar

I watched Joshua’s critique of your drawings – you did a great job with these and doing seriously well for a serious amateur! ( which I think you’re not). I learned from hearing and seeing the critiques, so thanks for sharing it. Keep up the work!

    Hey Aiden

I can see you were making sure to think of the figure in basic shapes and forms, and trying to see the changes in light and shadow as the planes change – which is great. I think you captured the overall pose well. I think separating the light and shadow sides and making them more clear would help create more dimensionality. The right lower leg perhaps repositioned a bit? It looks like that is the supporting leg, but anatomically it doesn’t read quite right but I feel that’s nitpicking a bit, haha. Keep up the drawing! I sure need to. I slack a bit in favor of doing more painting, but drawing is the foundation! Learn, draw, and draw some more.

p.s  I saw you said to Aiden that you are doing the colour theory course here – you mean Bill Perkin’s one right? If so, that course is SO good. I came out knowing far more than I could and still can put into practice! haha. I have a sketchbook dedicated to the course. I will have to go through it again soon, and several times in the future, as the course is jam packed with information.

    Hey Leon,

Haha all good! Volume can be something tricky for me to get right, I guess it comes down to the initial construction and values. Thanks for sharing the reference and how you used others to adapt the image to what you wanted to express. I don’t mind at all! I prefer more curvaceous and/or more muscular women, i.e. deviations from the norm. Hope you’re keeping safe.

    You’re welcome Diane 🙂

It is evident you work from life. I think the subtleties in mood and gesture can be difficult to capture from photographs, unless you imply them yourself, but I think trying to stay truer to the subject is preferred 🙂

Thanks for sharing that. Recent paintings I’ve made I used a coloured pencil to do the sketch, but didn’t lay a neutral mid tone before laying down the initial colours, which made getting the colours right real difficult. Back to laying a neutral ground. I only use linseed oil as a medium when I need the paint to spread a bit more, otherwise I use paint alone. If I do an underdrawing and tonal sketch I use mineral spirits. What kind of oil paints do you use? perhaps the paints you use have a higher oil content so you may need less medium? I disperse some linseed in a tiny little jar, and just barely dip my brush into it and then mix it with the paint before applying onto the canvas. If I need more, I dip a bit more.

Are you currently working on another painting? I hope you are keeping safe.

    Hi Diane

I watched Joshua’s critique of your piece. I was captivated by the expression and gesture of the gentleman. I get a subtle storytelling element out of the piece too,  there’s more to it than a pure portrait piece, which is lovely. The subtle nature is inviting. Did you create an underpainting or underdrawing? and did you use any mediums?

    Hi Leon

I just watched Joshua’s critique of your work – very informative!

I love your pinup piece! How do you go about developing the volumes of the figure?

    Hi Christian

I still find it a bit overwhelming and intimidating, but the discomfort is lessing the more and more I practice. The discomfort of course doesn’t come from the act of drawing itself – what a joy it is! It’s all the mental chatter and resistance.
Which course/s have you taken here so far?

    Cheers

    Hi Maartje 🙂

I undertook the Introduction to Drawing course at the beginning of the year – it was great! I had covered some parts here and there from the other courses I’ve done so far, but I got a lot out of going through them again and learned parts that I didn’t know otherwise. I loved Bill Perkin’s section on gesture. Though I hadn’t formally learned it at that point, I had watched and listened about it passively, but found it difficult to grasp. Bill helped me understand the concept and purpose of gesture a lot.

Have you started any new courses in the new year?

    Cheers

Thanks Jacob. I had slowed down the intensity of study in the new year as I was feeling burned out, but the momentum is building up again. Looking forward to putting in the time and work.
