September 13, 2022 at 11:02 am in reply to: Russian Drawing Course Part 20: Cast of the Eye #2695095
I did the cast drawing course last year but thought I could add to the conversation. Maximillian, I agree with you about Iliya’s strokes. They are so elegant! He’s amazing. I’m not sure if you are doing this, but during his courses I found it very helpful to draw along with him in real time. Although it was still a challenge to achieve the same effect with my own strokes, I learned so much. I also used Strathmore 400 paper for the assignments, and like Gwen I found I was able to get a cleaner line with harder pencils. I think I used mostly H and HB to lay in the drawing and build up tone and then I went back in with a 2B pencil for some of the shading. I had posted my drawings on the Open Critique when I did them, but I’ll post the eye study here in case it might be helpful. I thought your drawing was very well done! Nice work!
Your work is outstanding! I’m drawn to the portraits because that’s what I’m concentrating on, but your landscapes are exquisite as well. Your commentary is very helpful too. Thank you for all the inspiration!
Your understanding of anatomy and the human body will be invaluable in learning the constructive drawing technique that New Masters Academy teaches. New Masters is an amazing resource with world-class instructors, and it has exceeded all my personal expectations. Welcome!
March 30, 2022 at 11:24 am in reply to: Figure drawing of NMA model Lillias as Red Riding Hood #2283978Wow is right! Your work is fantastic! I took a quick look at your Instagram account for an overview. I especially love the family portraits. Your work is very inspiring. Thank you for sharing!
Your work is very beautiful. The pieces really draw the viewer in by telling a story, and they are so much more than just a realistic representation. I am in awe of your use of pastels!
Beautiful work!
Congratulations on finishing 100 days! Your work is both amazing and inspiring. I appreciate you also taking the time to answer questions about your technique. Good luck with the next challenge. I look forward to seeing your posts!
What a beautiful portrait! I’m certain that your friend/client will be overjoyed. I’ve watched your progress with great interest, and all your posts have been very informative. Your answers to Totte’s questions in particular were really valuable to my personal work. I wanted to ask a little more about your shading technique and what kind of strokes you use to build up the tone as your value control is remarkable. I like the effect of blending using a harder pencil over a softer pencil, but I often just resort to a stump or chamois. Your work is so exquisite. Do you use a blending stump or brush, or do you blend with small strokes? Also, I was curious how your think the Anatomy Masterclass will influence your future work. The assignments you submitted for that are nothing short of remarkable. Thank you for sharing!
This is a drawing I just finished for an elderly neighbor. She and her beloved dog both have worsening dementia. I wanted to make sure I captured the likeness so she could recognize him. Once I see the likeness it tends to make me afraid to push the drawing more, but I tried to be conscious of the suggestions from the previous posts.
What a stunning portrait. I like how clearly you distinguished the light and shadow sides.
Wow! That’s incredible!
Hi Marcolino! Yes, this piece is done in pencil. I started using a more limited range of pencils when I was going through the Russian Academic course and working on building up value slowly. The softer grades, although they seemed too grainy sometimes, would give me a more intense black without getting that graphite shine from reworking areas with harder pencils. That’s a good suggestion. I also like your idea to be selective in pushing the darks to bring the head forward. And to look at Sargent’s work! I’m guessing from your sketchbook posts that Sargent might be one of your influences. Your work is inspiring as so many have said, and I value your input. Thanks for taking the time!
Thank you so much, Leo, for the detailed response, the kind comment, and great suggestions! Fear of the dark is something I’ve been working on. I actually was just placing an order yesterday for the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black Artists’ Pencils. They may help me get more of a jet black similar to your suggestion of charcoal sticks. But I realize it’s not the materials causing the issue but my brain that needs to keep working on processing everything. Your rule of thumb is a vital concept that I understand it but tend to not put into practice especially when the local color is light. Anyway, I appreciate your spot-on feedback. I’ll look at Ansel Adams, too, for how he uses value. I love your description of his photos as a symphony!
I was impressed with the work you submitted for Glenn’s drawing materials course, but I just now looked through this thread. Your work is amazing and so is your background! I especially love the charcoal figure drawing. I don’t feel qualified to offer any constructive feedback other than to say wow! I look forward to more of your posts!
It’s great to see your latest work! I especially love the landscapes. They have a very “Fauvist” feel with the vivid colors. The self-portrait is quite beautiful too. That one really caught my eye since portraits have been my personal focus. I’ve been taking the Drawing the Head live summer class with Glenn Vilppu. It’s been amazing and I’ve learned so much. I really wanted to take the anatomy course with Joshua too, but I could only fit it the one course. There’s also an oil painting and a digital portrait live course as well. I wish I had endless time! It looks like you definitely fill your days! Keep up the awesome work!
