Day 52, charcoal pencil on 9×12 paper. Weekends are always a struggle, too many things on a go, however this is what I did today.

Day 54, today I felt exhausted so kind of just muddled through the subject. Not something you want to show , but challenge is a challenge and this is what I did today.

Great work here. These drawings work well and remind me of Arthur Guptill. These are works of art in their own right but I think that you need to simplify your matrix. Try to compose with fewer masses and focus more on getting that composition working on the simplest level before you do all of this lovely detail and texture work.

For example in your last post you seem to only be using two masses which is quite economic of you (economy is good) but those masses are so complex in terms of their shape that they tend to overwhelm the eye. The finish is great but it should hang on a simpler construction.

I think you should do small thumbnails for each of these even an inch by an inch and try several variations of that simple design before committing to one to draw.

    Thank you Erik!

Thank you Joshua for your comments and very valuable advice! I will try simplified matrix approach and varied thumbnail designs. I feel like driving a car on a rural road and having a difficult time to keep my wheels out of the old wheel ruts.

Day 60, 4b charcoal pencil on 9×12 paper.

I tried to follow Joshua’s advice to simplify masses and work on composition with thumbnails. I made 7 thumbnails before proceeding with the final drawing. In some sense I think I made a small progress, if anything it is in my way of thinking. Thanks again Joshua.

Day 61, charcoal pencil on 9×12 paper.

Simple subject, I did few thumbnails and then the final drawing. For change managing values felt easier than normal.
