Reilly Method Figure Drawing Week 5: Designing the Head, Continued

We are pleased to share with you a 10-week long class brought to you by Art Mentors. In this class, legendary illustrator Mark Westermoe teaches figure drawing using the Reilly Method. In this 5th lesson, Mark will continue rendering the head drawing from the previous lesson by introducing new pencil and sketching techniques. He will also analyze a collection of figure studies and demonstrate how to lay in tones on the head using charcoal pencil.

Materials

• Conté Charcoal Pencil
• Smooth Newsprint
• General’s Charcoal Pencil – 2B

Newsprint is not archival. Spending such great time in rendering on that surface seems a bit defeating. I am really enjoying the care in the rendering. What other surface would work well with conte and general but be archival?

Stan Prokopenko suggests Arches 88 silk screen paper for longer conte pencil drawings.
