In this video lesson world renowned painter Steve Huston will be painting a female figure from a Thomas Eakins painting. Steve will teach you how to use the symmetry of the figure as an artistic tool and how to break down the figure into a series of simplified forms, shapes, and planes upon which a light source interacts.

What an extraordinary teacher! Thank you Steve Huston and New Master’s Academy.
One of the many, many useful lessons that Steve delivers across his videos on NMA is that of interpretation. We can copy but it’s better and more interesting and more fun to interpret. This is apparent in Steve’s words and demonstrations. It’s very useful to the student (such as me) to be given “permission”, even encouragement, to avoid strictly copying. Through interpretation we learn the lessons more deeply. It’s enlightening to see Steve do this throughout his demos.

Yes, we do teach some more observational approaches, but most of our content is about how to create, not copy!
