Steve Huston will share with you his techniques for preparing materials, mark-making, and rendering a finish, all while explaining his thought processes! In this lesson, three different models pose for Steve. He chooses a body part or region that catches his eye and then demonstrates his approach to long pose charcoal drawings. He draws Rajiv’s forearm, Bridget’s back, and Barry’s thigh, head, and hand.

Steve Huston is an internationally renowned painter and draftsman. Huston was born and raised in Alaska. He studied at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, while working construction each summer to pay his tuition. Even before graduating with his BFA, Huston began illustrating for such clients as Caesar’s Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios among others. Huston began teaching life drawing and painting, composition and anatomy; first at his alma mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks Studios. He began his career as a fine artist in 1995, winning top prizes at the California Art Club Gold Medal Show that year and the following. Huston continues exhibiting his work widely.

    Beautiful demonstration by Steve 10/10

But I would prefer to watch him draw in realtime ,

Timelapse is still great, gives you the bullet points but just a thought

hi quick question, the course says “long poses in charcoal” but Steve used soft pastels (and not really charcoal)? or is a black soft pastel quite similar to a charcoal (pardon as i have never used charcoal at all..)

    thanks,

He’s using a combination of media. Soft pastel, conte (which includes compressed charcoal) and charcoal pencils).

The term charcoal drawing is the easiest way to communicate the style of drawing but you’re right, technically there’s other media at work.
