Charcoal Figure Renderings – “From Paper to Canvas”

Hi, this spring I plan to practice shading, roughly 1 hour a day, 4 days a week. I started of by taking two weeks full time going through the first 5 lessons of Joseph Todorovitch’s course “From Paper to canvas”, to gain an overview. These are the lessons I will focus on.

By the last assignment I started to feel like I was getting a grip on the process. But I still see many errors that I want to work on; With more time I would have wanted to articulate things more clearly, and avoid ambiguity.

Do you have any advice on procedure, or am I doing fine?

I feel comfortable in constructional and gestural drawing and I’ve learned anatomy through Proko’s course (here’s a hand I drew https://static.proko.com/images/skatej/skatej-assignments-hands-2.jpg). Last year I took Dorian Iten’s Shading Course, but before that I hadn’t shaded much. In the spring I read through Alla Prima II and during the summer I attempted to paint in oil (here’s a portrait I did in September https://www.proko.com/s/nTrF )

I’m taking Joseph’s course since I want to learn how to paint. I realized that it would be benificial to first improve my charcoal work. After summer I plan to dive into oil painting again for a rematch 🙂
